Tribute to Mohammed Rafi the Maestro

On this fateful day, 31st of July in the year of 1980 God seemed to have had a selfish motive...
He wanted the silky-golden voice of Mohammed Rafi all to himself...
That day he might have taken away Rafi Sahab from us, but The Voice (as he was referred to) will always remain immortal within us.

Mohammed Rafi (Mohd. Rafi, Rafi Sahab) born on 24th of Dec 1924, was a man of utmost integrity: gifted with unarguably *the best* voice in mainstream Indian musical history and yet had the heart of a common bystander. Out of his singing career that spanned four decades, he ruled the arena of playback singing for well over two decades, which, incidentally, is also right in middle of what is considered to be the Golden Era of Hindi Film Music (1940s - 1980s). And yet his unprecedented success never got better of him. Through the peak of his career, he was NEVER late to studio for his recordings, he NEVER did a retake out his fault, he was NEVER arrogant of his momentous achievements and above all, he NEVER stopped his Riyaaz (practice, for Urdu). Indeed mark of a true Master.

He remains an inspiration to me for his simplicity, dedication and passion. And, to me, his humility is far more overarching achievement than all of his topmost accolades put together. A veritable king at heart with a golden voice, altruistic, utterly soft spoken, he was (and in my view will remain) *the* most versatile, BEST'est and DARLING'est of the singers. PERIOD. No one was, is and will ever be able to dislodge this position of his from my heart.

At the peak of his career, where movie directors and producers would kill just to have him sing for their movies, this altruistic singer would often sing for free or ridiculously minuscule token payment for people who couldn't afford his actual fees. I know of no singer of his caliber (actually, I am kind of lying here, there *is no* singer of his caliber in existence!) capable doing such a deed. I believe that it was this goodness in his heart that trickled into his songs which made it difficult to dislike them!

I'm greatly indebted to him for his songs, on some occasions, have made my life a little more bearable, few minutes at a time. I have grown up listening his songs and I will grow old listening his songs. While the credit of impeccably good songs is to be rightfully shared with Lyricists and Music Directors who made amazing numbers, it was Rafi, the instrument, the master, who can rightfully be credited with putting life into those compositions. He could command his voice to suit any situation, mood and actor on the screen. If composers could whip out something outta nowhere, Rafi had no difficulty enlivening it through the gift of his voice. He simply had the power to mesmerize millions the moment he opened his mouth.

In the process of giving his golden silky and versatile voice to many great music directors like Naushad, O.P. Nayyar, S.D. Burman, R.D. Burman, C. Ramachandra, Ravindra Jain, Shankar-Jaikishen, Madan Mohan, Kalyanji-Anadji, Rakesh Roshan (and many more) he literally put life into beautiful lyrics penned by the likes of Hasrat Jaipuri, Sahir Ludhianvi, Ravindra Jain, Shailendra, Majrooh Sultanpuri and bajilions more. As a byproduct of this, many actors of that era got catapulted into stardom overnight with a push as little as that of just one song sung by Rafi! Such was the magic of his voice. ~~~muah~~~

Vividh Bharati, in his honor, is playing only Rafi's songs today for 24hrs. Get an earful if you want a taste of his voice. As a homage to this humble maestro, I earnestly urge you guys to REFRAIN from listening any bull-crap royally-raped remakes of his songs, otherwise widely known as remixes, at least for today. Not even the ones re-sung by anyone else. No one can replace the voice of a True Master himself, please pay due respect to maestro: Mohammed Rafi.

He might be no more with us, but his voice will always be with us.
Some people might be thinking, "but it is just a song", "he was just a singer", "you didn't even know him" ...
I cannot argue with those people, but you might have realized by now that I am serious even about fun and entertainment I have! (in short, KMA!)

I would love to share one, no, two, no wait a few songs from each one of his masterful categories. Be it romantic, classical, sad, serious, patriotic, flirting, or any other genre you can think of, and Rafi could sing it with no difficulty in one take. Each one better than the other.
These songs are some of my favorites, but I believe every one of them was super-duper-tuper hit!

Take your time as you listen through the list, but meanwhile... a minute's silence for greatest of singers of all time: darling Rafi Sahab.

We will always miss you Rafi. May God bless his soul.

Some Wonderful Moments of a Noogler

Last day of my internship @ Google was a mixed bag feelings: the joy of having worked with a great team at a great company, sense of achieving something in 3 months, joy of graduating soon, and at the same time the sadness of missing all the good things (read food) I had, the volleyball games, new friends, cycling, gym, and what not.
From Some Moments at Google

There are a hundred things that I did apart from regular work, and missed out on at least a thousand other things. I have put up an album that captures some of wonderful moments spent at Google. Especially an introduction to most of my co-workers: Some Moments at Google.

I lost a VERY precious gem yesterday

Bansi, yesterday night called me... and I immediately sensed tension in his tone. Couldn't think of what could have happened. I thought, rather I wished, I judged the voice wrong.

He then asked when did I talk to Romesh. What??? I jolted... What happened to him, he's sick, he's got a fracture? What tell me, fast! He's no more, he replied! I wanted to ROTFL on his joke... but wait... his voice was gravely serious... The morbid fear of mortality gripped me... we both chocked and after few uncomfortable moments, we resumed. All the buddies we talked to, claimed to have talked to him as late as 2 days back. This has to be some kind of joke someone played on you, I told Bansi. To confirm the news, we contacted one of his cousins and @#$@ing SADLY enough, this was not a rumour, neither a prank. GOD! This is one of those few times when I would have madly liked something to be a rumour or become victim of a prank. Somebody, please tell me how stupid and idiot am I to believe this news... please...

He was 1 of my closest buddies who would stand by me against the rest of the world, even if I was wrong! And not only for me, but also for our other group buddies, Bansi, Anand, Gaurav, et al.

Now...
Never can I see 'Sandwich calling...' on my cell again...
Never can I see an unread email from Romesh...
Never can I see him again...
Never can I visit his ship...
Never can I walk besides him...
Never can I hear his sweet comforting voice...
So much pain...

Whatever happened, GOD, he didn't do anything to deserve to be taken away from us! Not this soon! He was our such a good buddy... and you have bereaved us of THIS precious gem.

All I can wish for him now is, GOD, please let his soul rest in peace and give his parents the strength it takes to go through the grief of losing their only loved child at such a young, vibrant and healthy age. AMEN!

This post is NOT to express my love for him, but for he deserves the mention that he was not only a good friend, but also a very good human. This is to mark that HOW sorrowful we all are to NOT have him with us anymore :-( Romesh, I want to let you know that we all LOVE you so much!

(L-R: Sandwich and myself. That's Sandwich's much revered Indian Navy ID card I'm holding!)

As of this writing, none of we group members know the cause of his departure...
Neither do we have the courage to call up his home and find out the details...

My buddy Arun is back for a vacation

Sunday... the most exciting thing was I was gonna play my regular Sunday games... with my affable Univ United (aka U2) gang! The reason it's fun to play with *my* junta is two fold:

1. We All play a very careful game, no injuries is of paramount importance! Though never told formally, this is what is religiously followed, probably it's a good time to put it down formally...

When Winning and Losing don t have any meaning, that is when the real game happens, play happens.
Otherwise it is war.
War has a significance for Winning or Losing.
(this is a quote by revered Sri Sriji)

2. No cheating and screaming at the top of our lungs...
If someone calls a foul, we just give it... no arguments... real sportsmen, we all are! It saves lots of frustrations and time too!
So, even if I'm physically dead tired at the end of the game, mentally I'm fully charged for the coming week!

After a happy game, I dropped like a dead meat into my bed, of course after bath and got up only after few hours of sound sleep :-) You won't know the joy of GOOD sleep after a hard game, unless you experience it first hand!

After lunch, I lazed around reading some stuff, mostly random... and then came the MOST exciting part.... my budd'iest of buddies... Arun (aka Anna) was going to land in Bombay that night. I had promised I'll come to receive him, when he's flying back from US! So I went to his place, his daddy had booked a Sumo for to & fro journey. 1815 hrs we left Pune, reached Bombay just before 2201 hrs.

His flight was delayed by few minutes... I couldn't wait to see him. And uncle was just glued to the glass door, from a corner where he can see the farthest end of the arrival lounge... how cute... how eager was he to see his son!!! I was deeply touched! When I saw on the information board that his planes has touched the Indian grounds... I transfixed my eyes on the TV displaying interior part of arrival lounge... hoping to spot Arun, before Uncle did!!! After 45 minutes of surveillance, I gave up and was talking to a buddy who called up to give me company... not letting the TV screen go out of my sight. A few minutes later I felt a tight hug of strong arms from behind! Thief! Of course NOT! The very next instant I knew it has to be Arun! I didn't even have the courtesy to say bye to buddy I was talking to! So excited I was! I just said, 'Call you later' & cut the call! And responded to his hug! WOW! I could match his strength too! I was so excited to see him back, after 10 months!

As to little background... we first met on the first day of my engineering college (PICT), he made the first move to start the friendship. We then turned out to be the closest of buddies, touch wood, and spent ALL of the college time together: lectures, practicals, library, canteen, movies, final year project, etc. We even hopped all companies together since our first job! It was last year when we trod little different paths, while I decided to continue slogging at Nevis, he ventured for his MS at USC. And now here he was... with NEW dreams in his eyes... having tryst with The Uncle Sam's country... and loads of stories to share!

From the moment we hopped back into the car, through the time we reached his place in Pune, back at 0301 hrs in the night, about 4 hrs, we both kept talking ON & ON!!! Not even thinking for an instant that the driver was playing CD at the loudest possible volume (maybe he wanted to cut our noise) and uncle was getting bored all alone in the front seat! No one would have said that he had travelled for 30+ hrs all the way from LA to Mumbai!!! We wanted to talk about EVERY DAMN THING that happened (or didn't happen) to us in just one single instant... without letting a single moment be wasted in silence! Back to Pune, he didn't want me to leave... neither did I... but I had to come office today... and had to leave. Have come early to office, so that we can meet again in the evening. So bad that, for some problems, he had to cut short his 1 month trip to mere 15 days :-(

All the time, my mind now wanders to chat to him! I didn't know I missed him so much until he came back :-)

Nostalgia & Deep Sea review

3 days back I met Taklu (aka Tarun), one of my favourite seniors at hostel, college, room and even past company. And his younger bro, Parry. I still vividly remember the day when I was tensed, for the upcoming viva, and was struggling with quicksort. That was in SE, if I'm to rely on my memory. When I failed to grasp the whole essence of the algo, Taklu explained it to me and I've never forgotten Quicksort ever since!

It had been a long time I met him. We are only handful of the people from our hostel to be still in Pune. Most of them have either moved to US or to their respective home towns. As you can imagine, the BIGGEST joy of seeing him was getting nostalgic!!! We were talking on and on and on and on and on about good old hostel days. Our goof-ups...
bitter & sweet trysts with rector and hostel trustees...
the days when we were in-charge of the mess...
drive to the end of the city to get cheapest of mangoes (but best in quality) for the mess...
that 1-hr daily journey to PICT from Deccan in PMT...
those grueling days of the preparation leaves...
waiting endlessly in queue to call home from single STD booth near our hostel...
tea at nearby tapri...
our favourite food joint... cafe joint... snack joint... and what not!!!

It was REAL fun! It was like going through the highlights of the whole of our hostel days in just 3 hrs span!!! And Taklu then went on explaining me how he met some of our roomies while he was in US. And how he is happy with his current assignment at the job! What he's learning there! How he handles his team! Talking to him was just so reassuring. Effusing confidence, as always. But one thing where he disappoints me is... he's still single :-( But I believe the work is underway & wish him good luck in his endeavour.

BTW, Taklu also suggested that all of us ex-Trivedians who are still in Pune (or can manage a day's trip here) get together and hang out doing all that we did in those good old days: take tea at Trupti, snack at Umeed, lunch at Niranjan, take a post-lunch walk around the hostel and then disperse after a cuppa coffee at Radhika!!!

Besides that other major highlight of the week was that I managed to see IMAX-Deep Sea. I'm just short of words to describe the quality of direction that has been done. And the sound quality, even in the deepest and darkest parts of the oceans. Infested with all kinds of deadly and dangerous creatures. Just impeccable. While seeing it, it just teleports you deep below the ocean surface. Through the magic of IMAX, you will swim with some of the planets most unique, dangerous and colorful creatures, and understand this inspiring underworld. Directed by none other than Howard Hall, it's a MUST see for documentary fanatics.

Since there were no tournament matches this weekend, I enjoyed my regular Sunday game to the fullest, as always!

My darling buddy's engagement!!!

I was eagerly looking up to this event and eventual trip to Jalgaon not only because it was one of my best buddy's engagement, but also because a couple of my old hostel buddies would be there!

Trip didn't start well, planning went a little wrong. Confused, I didn't buy tickets for my bro. Later we managed to give a call and book an extra ticket though. But the tirade we had was really bad! Then, one of our buddies had to cut the plans for some urgent crisis needed his attention. Then, my friend, Sandwich (aka. Nautical, High Volume Low Density, Romi, or even Romesh occasionally) got off from rickshaw at wrong place. None tooooo serious, but all these looked as a premonition to spoiling the whole of trip. Thank GOD, I was wrong!

Journey in semi-sleeper was good, though the window did open every 15 minutes to let a strong jet of freezing cold air onto me. I had to get up and close it every so often. But nothing spoiled the talk that I had with Sandwich. He's in India Navy and I wanted to know everything he did and does almost instantly! The bus did breakdown 2-3 times and caused a delay of 2 hrs. But as we reached Jalgaon there was someone ready to pick us up. Once at hotel, we had a bath, shaved, brushed our teeth, and had good amount of tea. At least trip was getting exciting now.

(L-R: Sandwich and Vabs in hotel lobby)

(L-R: Sandwich and myself. That's Sandwich's much revered Indian Navy ID card I'm holding!)

We then reached Bansi's place. (Bansi is also known as Vinay Bansal, Paneer, or Punjabi du..., well last name's censored for general public!) Nothing could beat the fun of getting with old timers and talk about lovely days spent at hostel: those lovely moments spent together, studying in PL, cursing mess food, cursing the college, playing pranks on each other, going out for dinner, mess duties, volleyball tournaments, getting fired by rector, sneaking out for a movie, reading magazines (you know which ones ;-) ) taking care of each other when we were sick, and above all, pulling each other legs on stupid mistakes!!! The list can just go on.

After really heavy breakfast, we drove to Shirpur, 101 kms from Jalgaon, to Payal Bhabhi's hometown where engagement was scheduled to take place. That journey was memorable too. The whole day we kept on eating like bottomless pits, and blabbering on and on and on as if there's no tomorrow!

(L-R: Sandwich and Bansi, Dhulae Raja-to-be!)

Being Bansi's closest buddies we enjoyed good deal of attention! It was fun harassing Bansi in front of bhabhi, who sweetly took everything in the right spirit, though internally she must have felt like killing us ;-) Myself, Vabs & Sandwich had to make a premature departure since we had a bus booked back to Pune the same day. So, with his Mom-Dad's permission, we moved out. None of us felt like coming back. And that desire only grew stronger as we waited for 2 good hours for the bus to take off! Felt like running back and giving all a pleasant surprise. But we all had commitments of next day to honour and had to be back on time, while the rest of gang drove off to a resort and had MORE fun there! Journey back was also marked by constant exchange of happenings in each other's life. Man, I can't wait to be at his wedding now! Wish it will be MORE fun than this!

Charming Bansi and Sweet Bhabhi:

Bansi has now entered a stage, envied by all married & revered by bachelors to be the most exciting phase of marriage: post engagement and pre-marriage! All the best Bansi & Bhabhi, from all of us! Yes, after all it's first of my close buddies' engagement, I have all right to be as excited!

Nostalgia...

Last weekend I could reunite with my really old buddy, Amito, or Shaw, (Americanized version of his last name, Shah ;-) A few months back he bought a stunning new flat and this small dinner at his place would serve both purposes: reunion as well as see this new house! He sent a map to his place, and gave a few directions. Unfortunately I couldn't follow any of them properly, I was too new to that location, so was he! After calling him n times, and noting directions again and again, 4-5 trips around the place, we both got tired and a little frustrated. It was then I realized that we both are interpreting directions from opposite sides!!! His left was actually my right!!! LOL! Lesson learnt in following directions!!! Anyway, after some effort I got to his place, I walked through all the rooms and the balconys just took my breath away!!! Wish I had reached there a little sooner, I would have been able to enjoy the wonderful view from the balcony. (his online album containing new house's picture is private, so you will to wait till he makes it public).

I hogged on the amazing home cooked Pizza (yummmmyyyy... thanks to his mom and sis). But the best was yet to come....

This is where the title of this posts becomes relevant....
Old college days, nothing like recalling those golden years spent in college: subjects we hated, subjects that terrorized us, professors we liked, lectures we enjoyed, fun we had, fun we missed, picnics we went to, gotchas in labs, exams, practicals, etc. For good part of 2 hrs or so we had amazing time getting nostalgic and having a GOOD laugh!

Too much to deal with

With deadlines zeroing point-blank on me, last week was very hectic, but weekend getaway to my colleague, Sonia's wedding reception was GREAT! Well, I would say it was rather adventurous, money-wise! In all 9 people were planning to go to Mumbai for this function. All jovial, we went ahead and booked a full BIG private vehicle to commute to and fro Mumbai. What came next was too disappointing, people backed off. Due to some personal reasons, they had to cancel their trips, and guess what, only three of us (myself, Sagar, and Arun) end up going together! The car rental guy refused to cancel MUV and give us a smaller car. What this means is that we it won't be as much fun as we anticipated. The whole idea of booking a private vehicle was to have privacy and make as much noise and fun as we want without disturbing others. Anyway, with wonderful weather, and the idea of getting away from work for some time was good enough a reason to maintain our gaiety. Finally at 1601 hrs (an hour past planned time), we embarked on a wonderful journey towards Mumbai. On the way, we hogged on to snacks at Datta Snacks Center.

Above: Me (R: white shirt+cream trousers) and Sagar (L: black trousers)

Below: Arun (R: in T-shirt)

Reaching the reception hall myself and Sagar spent some time going around and checking the hotel, because I found it extremely unnatural and difficult to keep mouth shut and behave like a good boy in the reception hall with people around. I was gasping in awe, when Sonia and Sameer, the Bride and the Groom stepped into the room. Man, they were looking amazing:

L-R: Boney, Sagar, Me, Sameer, Sonia, Madhura & Arun.

Though I was very hungry and intended to jump off my seat as soon the time dinner was laid down, I ended up eating only piece of the mouth-watering chocolate cake and kulfi. wish I had more if cake for even after a week I can't forget the taste! We came back the same night. Reached Pune on Sunday morning at 0301 hrs. Exhausted I slept and DAMN IT... couldn't get up for the football game. I still feel so guilty for letting that happen.

But, fun ends here. This doesn't go well with the above post, but thought of sharing, nonetheless...
What came next, on Monday evening, was shattering.... I got a call that my maternal Grandmom has passed away. All the wonderful memories I had with her came flooding to my mind. She was keeping terribly ill since a couple of weeks and had just returned from ICU a week back. Whenever I felt feverish, or had a fever, I would go to her, and she would make me a steaming hot cup of magical tea. A cup of it inside my body, and the next day there would be no trace of illness! Such was the power of her love. But, everything that takes birth has to die, every beginning has an end. I wish her Soul Rests in Peace. With this bereavement, this week too has turned out to be pretty taxing.

Impetus n Concepts: Judging Projects @ Alma mater

This week was pretty eventful, had an opportunity to go to my Alma Mater. It was so much fun, the instant I touched the gates of my alma mater, I got nostalgic. I reminisced myself carrying drafter in first year, getting bored to death during electronics lectures (2nd year), having ball in microprocessors lab (3rd year), and not to forget the endless slogging nights in the lab to get the final year project working. All this came flashing in just an instant, and overwhelming feeling of belonging engulfed me. Also met the great person who's instrumental in helping me develop uncanny liking for microprocessors and assembly programming, Joglekar Sir. Glad he still remembers me and my buddy, Arun.

I was invited there to judge the projects at the most revered event @ PICT: Impetus & Concepts. Students from all over India are invited to participate in this event. This is one of the best times when students get an opportunity to showcase their abilities and talents. It is also the GREATEST chance for companies looking for hiring people with specific skill sets. I myself got a good job offer from my first employer after my group won the first prize sponsored by the same company. I make it a point to visit this exhibition every year without fail, and for past 2 years I've been invited to judge the projects. I never miss this opportunity which makes me feel 'I want to learn more'.

It's so much fun and exciting to see what students can do. The reason to go there is try and give something back to your college, and at the same time learn about new technologies and concepts. After judging allotted projects (on Wednesday and Saturday) I spent all the time looking and understanding other projects. Though drained at the end of the day, I was feeling very ecstatic.

I recommend that everyone should go and have a look at few projects during this event, you will be flooded with wild ideas and imagination. You will realize true meaning of the phrase: 'You never know enough'.
